Introduce Yourself Project
For the First Day of School
North Carolina Digital Learning Competencies
Digital Content and Instruction
Teachers will know and use appropriate digital tools and resources for instruction.
"Design technology-enriched learning experiences that encourage all students to pursue their individual interests, preferences, and differences."
"Identify, evaluate, and utilize appropriate digital tools and resources to challenge students to create, think critically, solve problems, establish reliability, communicate their ideas, collaborate effectively."
This project targets a Kindergarten classroom, and is an example of how I would introduce myself on the first day of class; however, this project could be modified to fit the individual needs of different grade levels and/or students.
Kindergarten is the grade level that I targeted for this project, and, from previous experience, it would not have been appropriate to have my students sit silently while I try and present about myself. Therefore, I incorporated questions that should make the kids laugh or have a reaction; this will keep my students from becoming restless and uninterested while I am presenting. It is my plan to get them excited about the upcoming school year and have them question their future lives.
Description of Project Tool:
For the Introduce Yourself Project, I decided to use Emaze as my technology tool to help me create this product. This technology tool was extremely easy to use and to create because it had available templates readily available; furthermore, there were educational slides prepared in advance that I could edit for this specific project. There are many options available on Emaze, however, I decided that for my intended audience it would be best to use an interactive slide presentation. Some of the other options appeared similar to a webpage, however, I chose a slideshow that I thought would be age-appropriate. Some of the slides that could be used and/or altered were regarding math questions, animals, and other fun themes.
How would my students will use/ interact with my presentation:
Because my audience is Kindergartners, I would separate my presentation from my students’ to let my students “Introduce Themselves” in their own way. My plan would be to create a book that lets my students introduce themselves similar to the way I did. After each section on my Emaze presentation, I would stop my presentation and have my students to create a page in their booklet to introduce themselves. This would help kids who are nervous on the first day of school; it would allow them a creative outlet to express themselves to their classmates.
For example:
I would begin the first day of school by telling my students that I am going to introduce myself and let my students gather all of the materials needed for their book project. Next, I would explain why we are introducing ourselves and that we are going to create a “safe-space” and a classroom where everyone’s ideas and thoughts are equally important to mine. I would then introduce how we are going to complete the project. I would tell my students that after each section that I present such as “Hobbies”, “My family,” etc. they will draw a picture of these things in their book with the same sections.
I will also incorporate technology in the classroom by having an interactive portion of my presentation. I have questions implemented in my presentation that will allow my students to interact with technology. The questions that I ask can be answered by counting numbers and writing on the presentation via smartboard.
How my students will share about themselves:
At the end of all of the sections, my students should have a complete book of what makes them unique individuals. Each student could also have the option of including pictures, if they want or extra drawings to make it “theirs.” Finally after the project is complete, I will scatter all of the books around the room and my students will go and get a book to learn about another student in the classroom; my students, moreover, will share some of what they learned and then we will place the books on “Our Kindergarten Class” bulletin board. Even though my students will not create technology, they are still interacting and creating based off of my presentation.
There are so many fun ways that this activity could be altered to fit other grade levels and/or the needs of each individual student. Every child will be able to participate in this activity regardless of socio-economic status because this project will be done in class and with classroom materials.
How to connect parents in the classroom:
I would send out my presentation in an email and/or detail the project in a sent-home letter prior to the first day of school. I would ask the parents to watch the “Before the First Day.” Next, I would send out an email before the first day of class that details this assignment and ask if any parents would like to donate resources. I would make sure to mention that it is not a requirement. I will also let my student’s parents know that this project and some examples, will be available on my teacher website that parents will have direct access to. I will not put each child’s project online, and will not include each child’s name for privacy reasons. Parents will be able to see all of the children’s books outside of my classroom on the bulletin board. Furthermore, I would like to keep parents connected with what is going on inside of the classroom and they will be able to see the progress of the class as a whole.
